The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) has returned to Naval Station Norfolk after completing a nearly three-month deployment in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility. The ship and its crew departed on February 25, embarking on a mission aimed at strengthening maritime partnerships, enhancing regional security, and conducting multinational naval operations in the Caribbean and surrounding waters.
Captain Nathan Diaz, commanding officer of the USS Normandy, expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of his crew during this deployment. “I could not be more proud of Normandy’s sailors and their relentless drive to execute the nation’s tasking,” he stated. “While independently deployed, it was an honor for our crew to reinforce the maritime commons with partners like Colombia, France, Guyana, the Netherlands, Panama, and the U.K.”
Throughout the deployment, the Normandy participated in several high-profile exercises, including the Trilateral Maritime Exercise on March 3, in cooperation with the Royal Navy’s HMS Medway and the Royal Netherlands Navy’s HNLMS Groningen. This exercise emphasized coordinated maneuvers and aviation drills, showcasing the capabilities of allied naval forces, including the deployment of a Royal Netherlands NH-90 helicopter.
In addition, the Normandy conducted a Bilateral Exercise with Guyana on March 27, working closely with the…

Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Margaret Brennan of CBS Face the Nation
In a recent interview, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared insights on the ongoing diplomatic efforts between Russia and Ukraine, following the first talks between the two nations in nearly three years. The discussions, which took place in Türkiye, were notably marked by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s absence, as he opted to send representatives instead.
While there were mixed reactions to the outcome of the meeting, Secretary Rubio emphasized that not all was lost. “They were not a complete waste of time,” he stated, pointing out a significant development: the agreement to exchange a thousand prisoners, which he described as a positive step from a humanitarian standpoint. Furthermore, he noted that both parties are preparing documents outlining their requirements for a potential ceasefire, indicating a move towards broader negotiations.
However, Rubio expressed concern regarding the sincerity of Russia’s intentions. “Are they tapping us along?” he pondered, emphasizing that the effectiveness of this dialogue would depend on the realism and rationality of the proposals exchanged. “We don’t have time to waste,” he asserted, underscoring the need for tangible progress and not just endless discussions.
Rubio highlighted the importance of direct communication, suggesting that a meeting between President Trump and President Putin could be pivotal in breaking the current stalemate. While he confirmed that the offer has been made public, he acknowledged the logistical challenges of arranging such a high-stakes conversation, expressing hope that it could take place soon.
In a related development, Rubio addressed his Senate colleague Lindsey Graham’s push for sanctions on Russia, reiterating that the Senate would ultimately take action. He indicated that while they had hoped for some progress in talks, there is a clear…

Rising temperatures are associated with increased burden of obstructive sleep apnea
By Tina Geiger / Staff WriterRising temperatures increase the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to a large new study published at the ATS 2025 International Conference. The study also found that, under the most likely climate change scenarios, the societal burden of OSA is expected to double in most countries over the next 75 years.
In addition to highlighting the critical importance of limiting global warming, the findings also emphasize the immediate need for strategies to alleviate the health and economic impacts of OSA as it becomes more common and severe, researchers said.
“This study really highlights the societal burden associated with the increase in OSA prevalence due to rising temperatures,” said Bastien Lechat, PhD, a senior research fellow at FHMRI: Sleep Health at Flinders University.
Previous cross-sectional studies identified a link between ambient temperature and OSA severity. However, this is the first to explain and describe that connection in detail.
For the study, researchers analyzed a consumer database of more than 116,000 worldwide users of an under-mattress sensor validated to estimate OSA severity. The dataset included around 500 repeat measurements per user. Researchers then analyzed this data against 24-hour ambient temperatures extracted from climate models.
Overall, higher temperatures were associated with a 45 percent increased likelihood of a sleeper experiencing OSA on a given night. However, these findings varied by region, with people in European countries seeing higher rates of OSA when temperatures rise than those in Australia and the United States.
“We were surprised by the magnitude of the association between ambient temperature and OSA severity,” Dr. Lechat said.
Researchers then…
