The U.S. Department of the Treasury designated the cartel as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) on July 25, 2025, underscoring the critical nature of this international issue.
In recent years, Maduro’s administration has faced increasing scrutiny and condemnation for his authoritarian tactics in suppressing democracy in Venezuela. In a contentious election held on July 28, 2024, Maduro claimed victory but has been criticized for failing to provide evidence of his win. The United States, along with many other countries, has refused to recognize the legitimacy of his presidency.
This latest reward increase is part of a broader initiative under the Narcotics Rewards Program (NRP), aimed at curbing transnational crime and assisting law enforcement in bringing fugitives to justice. This program aligns with the “America First” policy priorities set forth by President Trump.
