The Power Women of Manhattan Awards celebrates the fearless females who make Manhattan a thriving and vibrant place to work, live, and do business. “When women support women, amazing things happen,” exclaimed Victoria Schneps-Yunis, President of Schneps Media.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Smith has served as President & CEO of the Central Park Conservancy since 2018. Ms. Smith stated, “ Central Park is one of the most beloved places in New York, if not in the country. The Central Park Conservancy manages Central Park’s 843 acres, an essential space that welcomes over 42 million visitors annually. We take pride in this work so that people who live, work, and visit can be proud to call it your backyard.”

The prestigious recognition unfolded amidst a sold-out celebration at Bryant Park Grill, where luminaries from various sectors gathered to applaud the achievements of Smith and Elliott. Sponsored by Schneps Media, the event underscored the transformative power of women supporting women, a sentiment echoed by Victoria Schneps-Yunis, President of Schneps Media, who emphasized the profound impact that collective support can have on fostering positive change.

At the helm of the Central Park Conservancy since 2018, Elizabeth “Betsy” Smith has been instrumental in preserving and enhancing one of New York’s most cherished landmarks: Central Park. As President & CEO, Smith oversees the management of Central Park, which has lush landscapes and iconic landmarks. It serves as a sanctuary for New Yorkers and visitors alike, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Smith’s leadership has been characterized by a steadfast commitment to preserving Central Park’s essential purpose as a refuge amidst the urban sprawl. Over the past six years, she has led the Central Park Conservancy in comprehensive restoration efforts, ensuring the park remains a beacon of natural beauty and tranquility. Under her guidance, the Conservancy has released its first-ever strategic plan, outlining a vision for the stewardship of Central Park from 2020 to 2027.

One of Smith’s key initiatives has been to address the challenges posed by the park’s immense popularity while promoting financial sustainability and operational excellence. Her visionary leadership has also led to the completion of ambitious capital projects, such as the forthcoming Harlem Meer Center, a state-of-the-art facility set to enrich the park experience for generations. Ms. Smith supervises the $75 million annual budget to maintain the park.

Also honored was Erika Elliott, the Executive Artistic Director of City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage festival. Elliott has left an indelible mark on New York City’s cultural landscape. With over twenty-five years of experience in the music industry, Elliott brings a wealth of knowledge and creative vision to her role. As the longest-standing Programming Director in SummerStage’s history, she has played a pivotal role in elevating the festival to new heights of success.

Under Elliott’s leadership, SummerStage has become the largest presenter of free arts and culture in New York City, offering over 100 free programs annually, including more than 30 performances at Central Park’s SummerStage. Beyond the park’s confines, the festival extends its reach citywide, offering three months of programming and family events in all five boroughs. Additionally, Elliott oversees the Swedish Marionette Theatre in Central Park, curating year-round marionette shows for audiences of all ages.

Elliott’s journey to her current role has been marked by a diverse array of experiences in the music industry, from her early days at Loud Records and RCA Music Group to her tenure at S.O.B’s, where she nurtured the careers of emerging artists. Her dedication to fostering artistic talent and promoting cultural diversity has earned her widespread acclaim and recognition within the music community.

Beyond their professional accomplishments, both Smith and Elliott are deeply committed to their communities and the advancement of women in their respective fields. Their unwavering dedication is a testament to the transformative power of visionary leadership and collective action.

As the evening unfolded, hosted by WPIX-TV Channel 11’s Star Harvey and meticulously produced by Schneps Media’s Elizabeth Schneps Aloni, Joshua Schneps, and Demetra Mattone, attendees were reminded of the resilience and ingenuity that define Manhattan’s dynamic community. The 2024 Manhattan Power Women event not only celebrated the achievements of Smith and Elliott but also served as a rallying cry for continued progress and empowerment.
