Can patients request revision surgery immediately after nasal surgeries for which they did not get the desired result?
Generally, performing it at least 6-12 months after the first surgery seems appropriate. Because the recovery process has been completed to a large extent, the revision surgery will be more comfortable, and the result will be more successful. After the primary operations, the patient may be impatient and insist on having the operation again. Still, since this will affect the success of the operation and the healing process, it is necessary to convince the patient to be patient.
So what is the most critical factor in revision surgeries?
The most important factor in revision surgeries is what the problem is in the nose. It requires a problem-oriented approach. While the septum cartilage inside the nose is used to shape the nose in primary nose surgeries, it may be necessary to take cartilage from other body parts since it is used in revision surgeries. Especially in crooked noses, in cases where there is a problem with the nasal roof when there is a problem in the nasal tip cartilages, the need to take cartilage from another part of the body increases. Cartilage can be taken from the ear or rib depending on the need. If the cartilage need is high, rib preference would be reasonable. Today, the cadaver cartilage option is also available for patients who do not want cartilage taken from another part of their body. It can be used during surgery by providing sterile conditions for needy patients.
What should patients pay attention to after revision surgery?
The post-surgery process may take longer than primary surgeries. As in primary surgeries, skin structure is an important factor affecting recovery in revision surgeries. In noses with thick skin structure, edema and healing may take longer.
Still, in noses with thin skin structures, it may be necessary to put camouflage under the skin, depending on the procedures’ nature.
This makes the nose back smoother. Revision rhinoplasty surgeries are more specific than primary surgeries, and it is more appropriate to perform them by experienced surgeons in this field.
