Is Steve Guttenberg Making a Broadway Comeback?

Published on August 07, 2023

Steve Guttenberg opened a new show called Tales From The Guttenberg Bible at The Bay Street Theater, and the audience was loaded with Broadway producers, investors, and luminaries.  Stewart F. Lane, Ted Hartley, Jamie DeRoy, Bonnie Comley, Riki Kane Larimer, Jerry and Adrianne Cohen, Scott Schwartz, Frankie Lane, Melissa Giordano, Randie Levine Miller, and The Bay Street Theater Board Members were spotted on the red carpet. Steve Guttenberg is known for his lead roles in Hollywood films of the 1980s and 1990s, including Cocoon, Police Academy, Three Men and a Baby, Diner, The Bedroom Window, Three Men and a Little Lady, The Big Green, and Short Circuit. He was on Broadway in Prelude to A Kiss and Relatively Speaking, so his appearance at The Bay Street Theater has people asking, “Is this his prelude to Broadway?”

The show is Guttenberg’s life story of a fresh-out-of-high-school wannabe who makes it big in Hollywood. The script is based on Guttenberg’s 2012 memoir published by Thomas Dunne Books. The cast includes Carine Montbertran, Dan Domingue, and Arnie Burton, playing 90 different characters in fast-paced costume, wig, and accent changes.  Some of the characters portrayed are Merv Griffin, Jerry Seinfeld, Laurence Olivier, the Village People, Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner, Barry Levinson, Ron Howard, Jessica Tandy, Leonard Nimoy, Tom Selleck, and Ted Danson. Tales from The Guttenberg Bible was first developed at The George Street Playhouse under the direction of David Saint. The Bay Street Theater production cast and director remain with David Saint, Arnie Burton, Carine Montbertran, and Dan Domingue.

Steve Guttenberg’s good looks and comedic timing propelled him to become one of the film industry’s top box office names. From 1980 and 1990, he performed in more movies than any other actor in the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG), and he was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His movie franchises have already had sequels, and there have been rumors of upcoming sequels and spin-offs for decades. Tom Selleck and Ted Danson have been mentioned in the Three Men and A Baby sequel, allegedly titled Three Men and A Bride. There have been seven Police Academy films so far, so Police Academy Eight seems the natural progression. And why not another film for the Cocoon series as baby boomers age?

CBS Sunday Morning says Bay Street is considered ” …one of the Country’s pre-eminent regional theatres”,  and Newsday has been quoted as “…in the same league with the best major regional and Off-Broadway theatres.” So, watch for Tales of The Guttenberg Bible to make its way to the Great White Way of Broadway.
