The black lines are usually parts of the metal crowns used to hold the teeth together that are showing. It usually happens when the metal crowns are placed on the visible teeth when you smile, making the crowns look unappealing. It is important to note that these dark lines do not occur on natural teeth that do not have metal crowns fitted. Some of the causes of the black lines are,

  1. Use of cheap metals
The traditional crowns are well known for using any available metals, including the non-precious tin metal. The cheap metals are harmful to the gums with patients developing allergies due to their continuous use. The black lines are usually formed due to the metals leaching out and tattooing themselves on the gum edges.
  2. Porcelain metal crowns
Like ordinary metal, the porcelain crowns are made with a silver-colored metal base reflecting through the gum, creating the black line. This occurs because the metal base is fitted to hold the crowns in place by giving the porcelain strength. However, as the porcelain wears and gets thinner, the gum on the other end is receding, thus exposing the porcelain making the black line more visible.
  3. Improperly fitted crowns
Originally, porcelain crowns are meant to fit precisely and fit the tooth and completely seal it well. However, some mishaps may occur, and if not detected early and repaired, the patient will have an incomplete fitted crown that will allow accumulation of stains. The stain usually collects at the edge of the tooth and if not quickly dealt with, results in a black line that can damage the entire tooth.

The black line’s dental treatment is getting entirely new modern porcelain crowns that do not use any metal. The new porcelain crowns are available at NYC Smile Design. You can book an appointment with the dental team at the practice to get back your beautiful smile.
