Israeli Pashtun, a pioneering political activism organization, announced its “Reuniting the 12 Tribes” mission. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and understanding between Jewish-Israelis and Pashtun-Israelis, challenging conventional narratives about ethnicity and belonging in the Middle East.
The campaign, spearheaded by founder Hawed Nabi, leverages digital platforms to reach audiences across Israel, Australia, and America. It seeks to educate the public about the historical connections between Jewish and Pashtun communities, while advocating for a more inclusive understanding of Israeli identity.
“Our mission is to bridge ancient heritage with modern activism,” said Hawed Nabi, founder of Israeli Pashtun. “Through highlighting the shared roots of Jewish and Pashtun communities, we aim to create a new paradigm for dialogue in the region.”
This mission comes at a critical juncture in Middle Eastern politics. Recent data from the Israel Democracy Institute shows that optimism about the future of democratic rule in Israel remains low, with only 39 percent of Jews and 27 percent of Arabs feeling optimistic as of January 2025.
However, there has been a steady increase in optimism about national security, with 56 percent of Jews and 23 percent of Arabs expressing optimism. Israeli Pashtun’s initiative addresses these complex sentiments by offering a unique perspective on identity and belonging.
The campaign efforts are designed to challenge what Nabi refers to as “Iranian and Arab narratives” while promoting a more nuanced understanding of Middle Eastern identity.
“We are not just talking about history,” Nabi explained. “We are creating a platform for contemporary dialogue that has the potential to reshape how we think about ethnicity, religion, and national identity in Israel and beyond.”
The campaign also addresses the complex realities of diaspora communities. With the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including the recent Israel-Hamas war that has led to increased tensions and hate crimes in cities like Vancouver, Israeli Pashtun’s message of unity and shared heritage takes on added significance.
“In times of conflict, it is crucial to remember our shared humanity. Our campaign is not just about the past, it is about creating a more inclusive and understanding future for all communities in the region,” Nabi stated.
Israeli Pashtun’s initiative comes as political activism worldwide is evolving. The organization’s digital-first approach aligns with global trends, as seen in recent student protests across the United States that have leveraged online platforms to amplify their message.
As the campaign unfolds, Israeli Pashtun invites individuals, community organizations, and academic institutions to engage with its resources and participate in the dialogue. The organization emphasizes that this initiative is not about religious conversion but fostering understanding and cooperation.
“We are at a pivotal moment in history. Acknowledging our shared past, we can work together to create a more harmonious future. This campaign is just the beginning of what we hope will be a transformative movement in Middle Eastern discourse,” Nabi concluded.
