A buzz is steadily building among psychology buffs and historical movie fans alike for Anthony Hopkins’ next major film role. According to IMDB, it won’t be long now until we all get to see Hopkins step into the role of Sigmund Freud, the godfather of modern psychoanalysis, in the much-hyped upcoming movie Freud’s Last Session.
This dramatic and all-star independent feature has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics Inc., a division of Sony Pictures that was founded by former Orion Classics heads Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and, Marcie Bloom back in 1992. While a full list of release dates is yet to be confirmed, there are promising indications that the movie will be hitting screens in December 2023, providing powerfully stimulating watching for winter movie-goers.
Alongside news of distribution developments, it has also been announced that multi-talented actor, director, writer, and producer Enzo Zelocchi has signed up to serve as an executive producer for this exciting project. The multi-award-winning creative may have been tempted to the project given its phenomenal potential to pull in and wow the critics, adding yet more clout to his already impressive collection of film credits and critical accolades.
Speaking of potential, Variety Magazine has already named Freud’s Last Session as one to watch in the run-up to next year’s Oscars ceremony. If the film does earn one of those coveted golden statues, it may represent a third win for leading actor Anthony Hopkins, who already secured Oscar wins for his movies Silence of the Lambs and The Father.
Director Matt Brown created a masterpiece in order to pull his audience into an imagined interaction between Sigmund Freud and his contemporary, acclaimed author C.S. Lewis, who wrote The Narnia Chronicles. The movie is based on a tale told earlier by playwright Mark St. Germain, who brought this unusual meeting of minds to the stage back in 2014.
Sadly, there is no evidence that Freud and Lewis ever met in real life—to debate the existence of God or otherwise—but imagining such an interaction is sure to be a stimulating ride for intellectual cinema lovers!
Hopkins will be supported by an incredible cast, including Matthew Goode and Jody Balfour of The Crown fame, Orla Brady, Liv Lisa Freis, and Stephen Campbell Moore. Meanwhile, behind the camera, Brown and Zelocchi are joined by production designer Luciana Arrighi and cinematographer Ben Smithard, who worked with Hopkins on The Father.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Classics is lined up to distribute the movie in North America, the Middle East, India, Eastern Europe (excluding Russia) and Turkey, plus on airlines worldwide. Meanwhile, Westend Films and CAA Media Finance have made fast work of securing distribution deals elsewhere, including in Australia, Italy, Portugal, Israel, and Greece.
