KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The fusion of technology and academia reached its zenith at the Fusionex Data Challenge, a groundbreaking hackathon event that attracted nearly 100 university students across seven notable institutions. Hosted over an adrenaline-pumped weekend, young tech aficionados competed in a 32-team battle, fueled by innovation, ambition, and determination.

Held at the prestigious Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, the event witnessed a marathon of coding, strategizing, and innovating, with teams working late into Saturday, only to pitch their solutions at daybreak on Sunday. The competition’s intensity reflected the dedication and skill these young individuals brought to the table.

From the heated contest, five groups emerged victoriously, rewarded not only for their tech prowess but also their creativity and vision. These champions were bestowed with cash awards, enticing offers for professional training, and the opportunity to redeem special deals on 8excite. At the pinnacle stood Team O(1) from Monash University, with members Alvin Tan Jian Jia, Lim Tai Jie, and Lau Zhe Yu, claiming a sumptuous prize package worth RM9,600. This included RM3,000 in cash, a professional training course tagged at RM6,000, and a RM600 splurge on 8excite reward points.

But Fusionex wasn’t just about recognizing talent; it aimed to nurture and propel it. Each of the top five teams was immediately shortlisted for potential roles at Fusionex, offering them a chance to contribute to revolutionary technologies that promise to transform industries. Moreover, an exclusive invitation to Fusionex’s ‘Office of Superheroes’ awaited them—a space that bagged the ‘Most Innovative and Sustainable Design’ award at the Asia Recruitment Awards 2019.

Beyond APU’s students—who formed 16 teams—the event saw representation from a slew of universities, including Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Multimedia University (MMU), Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and Monash University Malaysia.

Ensuring participants were well-prepped for D-day, Fusionex organized a comprehensive training session a week ahead of the competition. This primer saw students dive deep into Fusionex’s pioneering Big Data platform, Fusionex GIANT, while also acquainting themselves with Python Notebook Training and Visual Pack Development. Throughout the hackathon, they were mentored by experts from Fusionex, who provided insights, guidance, and encouragement.

Speaking on the occasion, Fusionex founder and group CEO Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh commented, “Collaborating with APU, a stalwart in academia, on this hackathon has been an inspiring journey. At Fusionex, we constantly strive to shape the next generation of tech leaders, guiding them towards bright career prospects. Our aim with this challenge was to kindle a passion for innovation and data-driven solutions among students, ultimately driving progress across various sectors.”

Echoing his sentiments, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Ir Ts Vinesh Thiruchelvam, remarked, “Our partnership with Fusionex has been instrumental in bolstering big data education in Malaysia. As pioneers in producing dedicated data science graduates in the country, APU’s data-centric curriculums, enriched by industry insights from partners like Fusionex, ensure our students step into the professional world, ready to make a mark.”

In sum, the Fusionex Data Challenge was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of the vibrant, youthful tech community and a testament to the boundless potential they hold.
