As the federal government enters a shutdown, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) has issued a strong statement urging Congress to swiftly pass a continuing resolution or the FY 2026 appropriations bills. The association emphasizes the urgent need to end the shutdown and restore normal government operations.
Mathew Silverman, National President of FLEOA, expressed the frustrations and challenges faced by federal law enforcement officers during this critical time. “Federal law enforcement officers are once again being asked to do the impossible – protect this country without a paycheck,” he stated. He highlighted the dedication of officers who continue to serve while being denied compensation due to political stalemates.
Under the current shutdown, federal law enforcement officers, deemed “essential,” are required to work without pay, while many support staff face furlough. This situation not only places financial burdens on officers and their families but also risks public safety and operational readiness. Silverman pointed out the added strain on officers who must take on extra administrative duties during this period.
“The challenges we face from violent criminal organizations and the influx of dangerous substances like fentanyl make our jobs critical,” he noted. “Yet, being asked to manage additional responsibilities during a shutdown creates dangerous distractions from our core mission.”
Although the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019 ensures back pay for employees once the government reopens, many officers are left struggling to meet their immediate household expenses, mortgage payments, and childcare costs without income.
FLEOA is calling on Congress to prioritize the safety of the American people and the welfare of federal employees. “We urge our lawmakers to set aside their political disputes and fulfill their fundamental duty to ensure the government remains open and functional,” Silverman stated emphatically.
The association remains committed to advocating for federal law enforcement officers and asserts that they will not remain silent on these issues. “We will continue to speak out until this shutdown is resolved and our officers receive the respect and pay they deserve,” Silverman reiterated.
FLEOA, representing more than 33,000 registered members across over 65 federal law enforcement agencies, stands ready to collaborate with Congress and the administration to avert future shutdowns that jeopardize national security and the well-being of federal employees.
