The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) is urging Congress to pass a continuing resolution to avert a potential government shutdown, arguing that it would impose undue hardship on federal law enforcement officers and compromise public safety.

Mathew Silverman, the National President of FLEOA, emphasized the dedication of federal law enforcement personnel, stating, “Federal law enforcement officers will continue to show up and protect this country, even when the government shuts down, but it’s unacceptable to ask them to do so without pay.” He added, “While the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019 ensures we will eventually receive back pay, that does nothing to help families make ends meet in the middle of a shutdown. Missed or delayed paychecks still mean missed mortgage payments, empty refrigerators, and mounting stress.”

Unlike many federal employees who are furloughed during shutdowns, law enforcement officers are deemed “essential” and must work without regular pay until the government reopens. This unprecedented situation is further compounded as these officers are also required to fill in for support personnel who are not working, diverting their focus from vital investigative activities.

“We’re out there every day disrupting violent criminal networks, stopping the flow of deadly fentanyl, and protecting our communities,” said Silverman. “But during a shutdown, we’re also being asked to fill administrative gaps left by furloughed colleagues. It’s not just a hardship; it’s a dangerous distraction.”

FLEOA urges Congress to refrain from the political brinksmanship that leads to repeated governmental shutdowns. Silverman emphasized, “It is the lawmakers’ fundamental duty to keep the government funded and operational.”

In light of the impending threat of a shutdown, FLEOA stands ready to collaborate with both the administration and Congress to seek a resolution and ensure that law enforcement officers can continue their critical work without interruption. The association asserts its commitment to safeguarding not only the operational continuity of government but also the safety and security of the American public.
