“To my greatest surprise, my very first poem, written when I was ten years old, was published in a newspaper.  While I have been writing all my life, I only returned to poetry 50 years later, when stunned into silence by the sheer enormity of Auschwitz,” says Fella Cederbaum. “I like to play with music and short films, and I think they can enhance each other to communicate meaningful messages.” Her exploration of diverse genres stems from a wish to engage with audiences on multiple levels. This combination of different art forms creates a more complete and engaging experience, pulling viewers and listeners into the narrative.

What Is the Most Challenging Aspect of Being a Writer?

While rewarding, a writer’s path presents challenges beyond the mere act of putting words to paper. According to Fella Cederbaum, the most persistent hurdle lies in battling self-doubt.  It demands the cultivation of an unwavering belief in the validity and relevance of one’s own voice.

In a conversation about the realities of creative life, Fella Cederbaum emphasized the importance of inner resilience. “The hardest part is believing in yourself,” Cederbaum said. “There are always doubts and insecurities, but it’s important to keep writing and to simply trust your voice.”

Conquering these internal obstacles demands talent, skill, and a deep-seated conviction in the value of one’s work. “If I am not invested in the project, it will be difficult to connect with the audience.”

Overcoming Creative Blocks

While writers and artists frequently encounter creative blocks, Cederbaum feels blessed not to have to tackle that particular challenge. “however,” she adds, “in terms of producing a coherent film, “Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to take a break,” Cederbaum advises. “When you return to the project with fresh eyes, you may find that the solution comes more easily.”

Her collaboration with other artists, such as her videographer and audio engineer, serves as a very welcome exchange of ideas and perspectives, often yielding new insights. This collaborative spirit clearly enriches the overall quality of her work

The Role of Personal Experience in Cederbaum’s Work

“I believe that the most powerful stories are those that come from the heart,” Cederbaum shares. When you write about something that you care deeply about, it resonates with the audience on a different level.”
