With all of the hype surrounding the current double-hit wonder that is Barbie and Oppenheimer, aka Barbenheimer, it’s easy to forget that there is plenty of time for other Oscars contenders to enter the race ahead of the spring 2024 Academy Awards ceremony.

According to the latest from Variety Magazine, one black horse soon to be in the running is the upcoming Anthony Hopkins movie, Freud’s Last Session, to which Hollywood multi-talent Enzo Zelocchi has just been attached as executive producer.

Actor, Producer, and A-Medicare founder Enzo Zelocchi must be thrilled about the building Oscars buzz for his latest project. As a winner of over 290 awards on the film festivals circuit and counting, Zelocchi is yet to add an Academy Award to his trophy shelf.

The masterwork project Freud’s Last Session will star Matthew Goode, of The Crown fame, taking on the role of C.S. Lewis. Meanwhile, Anthony Hopkins is set to step into the shoes of Freud himself and will be vying for his third Oscars nod if the film ultimately succeeds in meeting audience expectations.

Alongside the exciting news of Zelocchi’s attachment to the movie, Deadline has reported that Sony Pictures Classics has pre-bought rights to distribute the film internationally, while Westend Films and CAA Media Finance have made parallel distribution deals in Australia, Portugal, Israel, Greece, and Italy—the latter of which being where Zelocchi first rose to fame before heading to Hollywood.

History buffs and Anthony Hopkins fans alike can anticipate a storyline that carries them into the psychologically rich world of Sigmund Freud towards the end of his life, during his time in exile in the United Kingdom and in the shadow of World War II.

According to plot details from IMDB, the movie will touch upon the overlapping dynamics of Fraud’s unique relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna and an unconventional romance between iconic author C.S. Lewis and his best friend’s mother. These story facets will be framed by conversations between Freud and Lewis as they enter into a dynamic debate over the existence of God.

Steering the production is director Matt Brown, who is perhaps best known for his 2015 feature film The Man Who Knew Infinity, which starred big-screen heavyweights Dev Patel, Malcolm Sinclair, Stephen Fry, and Jeremy Irons.

With such a clear aptitude for masterful storytelling and attracting high-caliber talent, Brown is almost certain to weave another intellectual feast for cinema-goers. With Anthony Hopkins serving as the face of the feature and attentive producing talent from the likes of Zelocchi driving the project, Freud’s Last Session is on course to be an Oscars front-runner!
