Benavidez vs Andrade boxing fight preview

A former two-time WBC super middleweight champion, Benavidez (27-0, 23 KO) turned pro in 2013. In 2017, he beat Ronald Gavril to win the WBC super middleweight title but was stripped after testing positive for cocaine.

He reclaimed the title from Anthony Dirrell but was once again stripped after failing to make weight against Alexis Angulo. ‘Mexican Monster’ became the WBC (interim) Super Middleweight Champion after knocking out David Lemieux on May 21, 2022. Earlier this year, he competed against former champion Caleb Plant and beat via unanimous decision.

Andrade, aka ‘Boo Boo’ (32-0, 19 KO), is also undefeated and a former two-division champion, having won super welterweight and middleweight gold. He won the silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games and turned pro the next year.

In 2013, he won the WBO Super Welterweight title against Vanes Martirosyan and the WBA (regular) Super Welterweight title from Jack Culcay in 2017. Andrade became the middleweight champion in 2018 and successfully defended the title five times during the next three years but vacated his title following the postponements against mandatory challengers Janibek Alimkhanuly and Zach Parker.

Fight against Benavidez is the toughest challenge of his career to date. His style hasn’t always produced exciting fights, and he has often claimed to be one of the most avoided fighters in the sport.

Benavidez vs Andrade: What has been said?

Benavidez talked about the pressure ahead of the game but said he is happy with it.

“These are the types of fights I want. These are the types of fights that motivate me. Demetrius Andrade is a slick fighter with many tricks in his bag. He’s going to bring the best out of me.”

“He’s a top fighter. When you get fighters like him it’s always 50-50. I have nothing but respect for him. He has power. He’s a threat to anybody.

“He’s a very technical fighter. He’s a very good fighter. He’s a champion in two different divisions. There are a lot of things that he does well. A lot of people didn’t take the fights with him because they know he is a problem. But for me, I want to be the best.”

He also said while Andrade is dangerous, he is not a unique threat.

“I’ve always sparred against a lot of boxers who move around a lot. It’s not like I’m new to this. I’ve seen [Andrade’s] style.”

“He moves around a lot and throws a lot of good combinations, uppercuts, and looping overhand lefts. I’ve been studying him… I’ve been working really hard in this camp. I’m looking forward to having another massive pay-per-view event.”

What’s on the undercard?

Outside the main event, the undercard also has exciting bouts lined up. In the co-main event, David Benavidez’s brother, Jose Benavidez Jr, will be looking to pull off the upset against the WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, who will return to the ring after June 2021.
