Marking a new development for fans of psychological horror and suspense, bestselling author J.D. Barker has been selected to reinvigorate the Flatliners franchise with an upcoming novel.

The franchise has captivated audiences since its 1990 debut as a film. The same year, Leonore Fleischer adapted the first “Flatliners” novel based on the original screenplay. However, Barker’s upcoming work will be its first literary expansion.

The original film, directed by Joel Schumacher, garnered praise for its visuals and exploration of ethical and existential questions. It grossed over $61 million at the box office and has since maintained an active fanbase. It originally starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon, whose characters explored the consequences of experimenting with near-death experiences.

The franchise, known for its blend of psychological horror and existential themes, was previously revived with a 2017 film remake. Under Barker’s guidance, it takes a step into the modern literary world.

Barker is an internationally bestselling author known for his gripping thrillers and horror novels, such as The Fourth Monkey series and “Dracul.” His involvement in the project promises to give a new perspective to the “Flatliners” mythos while staying true to the metaphysical themes that made the original concept so beloved.

According to the original film writer, Peter Filardi, he is thrilled to have Barker on board for the project. He states that the author’s talent makes him the best choice for reinventing the Flatliners franchise for new readers.

Barker is equally excited for the project, saying, “Flatliners has been a part of our cultural consciousness for decades, and I’m honored to bring this iconic story to the page.”

Publication details and the release date for the new “Flatliners” novel will be announced soon. Film and television rights will be managed by Intellectual Property Group, 12400 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90025.
