Under the direction of President Donald J. Trump, Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy has announced the appointment of Andy Byford as Special Advisor to the Amtrak Board of Directors. In this pivotal role, Byford will oversee the redevelopment of New York Penn Station, reporting directly to Amtrak’s directors while closely collaborating with the Department of Transportation (USDOT).
Byford, who previously served as Senior Vice President at Amtrak, brings a wealth of experience from his extensive background in metropolitan public transportation systems across New York City, Toronto, London, and Sydney. His expertise aligns with the administration’s vision of a modernized infrastructure that is both functional and iconic.
“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, America is building again,” said Secretary Duffy. “We’re thrilled to have Andy oversee the redevelopment and modernization of this vital transit hub. The decision to appoint Byford comes after an important transition in project leadership. Last month, Secretary Duffy announced that the Federal Railroad Administration would withdraw the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) from leading the Penn Station initiative, placing Amtrak at the forefront of this critical infrastructure project.
Deputy Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury emphasized the importance of accountability in infrastructure endeavors, stating, “By vesting responsibility with Andy Byford, USDOT is setting the stage for a transformational public-private investment that will revitalize Penn Station as a spectacular, safe, and reliable passenger rail gateway.”
