Secretary of State Marco Rubio Outlines Two-Phase Approach to Gaza Peace Negotiations

Secretary of State Marco Rubio discusses Middle East peace negotiations

In a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the ongoing peace negotiations in the Middle East, specifically focusing on the conflict in Gaza. When asked if the war was reaching its conclusion, Rubio emphasized that while progress is being made, key steps still need to be implemented.

Rubio outlined a two-phase approach to the negotiations. The first phase involves the logistics of releasing hostages, as agreed upon by Hamas in response to President Trump’s framework. “Discussions are ongoing about the logistics of who will facilitate the hostage release and the conditions needed to ensure a safe exchange,” Rubio stated. He highlighted the urgency of establishing a ceasefire, as continuous fighting could hinder the release process.

The Secretary noted that while the immediate goal is to secure the release of all hostages—both living and deceased—there are significant logistical challenges that need to be navigated. He emphasized the importance of coordination with organizations like the Red Cross to ensure a smooth operation.

However, Rubio cautioned that the latter phase of negotiations would pose even bigger challenges. This involves establishing a Palestinian leadership that renounces violence and effectively disarms terrorist groups. “Without addressing these long-term issues, including disarmament and building a stable governance structure, we risk repeating the cycle of conflict,” he warned.

Rubio also acknowledged the international support behind the U.S. proposal, noting the involvement of countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and others, which puts pressure on Hamas to cooperate.

Regarding the timeline for the hostage release, he expressed hope for a rapid resolution but stressed the complexities of negotiating in an active conflict zone. “I would like to have seen the hostages released yesterday,” Rubio remarked, indicating a desire for expedited action while recognizing the need for careful planning.

As the situation continues to evolve, the Secretary of State reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to fostering a peaceful resolution and emphasized the importance of collaboration with international partners to ensure lasting stability in the region.
