On February 1, 2025, President Trump issued executive orders that imposed an increase in tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China. According to the White House Fact Sheet released that same day, “The extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, constitutes a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.” This is in reference to the lethal drugs and violent aliens stampeding across our nation’s borders, as well as the unconscionable human trafficking driven by the Mexican Cartels.
It is no secret that China and Mexico are responsible for trafficking the vast majority of fentanyl into the United States, and while they profit from killing an average of 75,000 Americans annually, the governments of Mexico and Canada yawn.
After President Trump announced his intention to impose these tariffs, and clearly explained his justification, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum made the delusional statement that our struggles with fentanyl are the result of law enforcement’s failure to “combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their main cities.” She expanded her denial by further asserting that American law enforcement also failed to stop the Cartels’ money laundering criminal conduct.
Contrary to her pathetic attempt to deflect all responsibility, law enforcement officers from all departments within the United States risk their lives every day to identify and arrest those criminal aliens responsible for peddling their death to Americans. It is rather telling that Sheinbaum was silent on the increase in the number of law enforcement officers assaulted by violent aliens entering the U.S. through the Southwest Border.
On behalf of the brave law enforcement officers in the Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshals Service, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, and all federal components protecting our homeland, we denounce the misguided demeaning remarks made by Sheinbaum.
Her unacceptable posture of denial only serves to validate President Trump’s executive orders.
Sadly, after President Trump announced the tariffs as a last resort to protect our homeland and the citizenry, certain members of the news media sought to ignore the public safety implications and instead berate his decision.
News headlines whined about how the President’s tariffs may contribute to inflation, and elevate the cost of grocery items that are imported. We are deeply troubled by such irresponsible journalism, and we maintain that sacrificing guacamole and tequila for the safety of our children and all Americans is worth it.
After crying foul over the tariffs, Mexico and Canada quickly acquiesced to President Trump’s demands and agreed to substantially augment their law enforcement presence and efforts at their respective borders. To Canada’s credit, they agreed to allocate $1.3 billion to strengthening their border enforcement and they also created a ‘Fentanyl Czar’ position. Mexico agreed to dispatch 10,000 troops to the Southwest Border in an effort to deter the fentanyl/alien stampede into the United States. So while many critics of the President moaned about the prospective price-hike on their guacamole dip, we are left to wonder why it took the threat of tariffs to get these countries to act responsibly.
In law enforcement, we refer to dying in the line of duty as making the ultimate sacrifice. If law enforcement officers are willing to make that profound sacrifice to keep Americans safe, then we respectfully ask that the critics sacrifice their tequila consumption temporarily so we can better protect them and all Americans from the threat of fentanyl and violent aliens.
