Former Professional Cyclist Igor Makarov Discusses the Green Movement in Modern Cycling

Published on November 13, 2023

Eco-friendly practices have become ingrained in the fabric of daily living, transcending the status of a passing trend to become a meaningful leap toward sustainability. This commitment to the environment is reflected in the consumption of organic foods, the preference for locally sourced products, and the adoption of solar power in homes. Such practices permeate all facets of life, influencing decisions even in transportation.

Amidst these green strides, an age-old practice is significantly transforming by adding a twist to traditional cycling by introducing modern bicycles. By its essence, Modern bicycles are revolutionizing the cycling world by infusing cutting-edge technology into the classic design, enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and overall appeal.

As reported by the BBC, the COVID-19 pandemic sparked a surge in bicycle sales, driven by concerns over public transport and a collective shift towards healthier routines. This boom in demand presented a challenge for manufacturers, who responded by enhancing their products with modern bicycles that capitalize on the increased popularity of cycling.

For the business leader, former professional cyclist, and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Management Committee Member Igor Makarov, the ascent of modern cycling is a catalyst for increased engagement in eco-friendly practices. He believes that these advancements can emphasize how cycling can be developed to cater to the market’s evolving needs, thereby inspiring a broader adoption of this sustainable mode of transport.

Marking the Rise of Modern Bicycles

Makarov’s love for cycling started at a young age. From having his first bicycle to competing professionally from 1979 to 1986 and sponsoring cycling foundations for young cyclists for many years, such as the Katusha Team and multiple European cycling federations, Makarov witnessed the evolution of bicycles. He has seen the industry push boundaries, experimenting with materials to enhance performance and sustainability.

Modern bicycles represent a quantum leap from their predecessors. Makarov notes the shift from steel frames to carbon, which offers unmatched lightness and durability. Cycling has branched into specialized disciplines, including utility, racing, and mountain biking, each with designs tailored to specific uses.

“Today’s bicycles are marvels of technology, offering over 20 speeds and the convenience of electronic shifting on some models,” explains Makarov.

Incorporating sophisticated braking systems, such as modern hydraulic brakes, ensures greater safety and control in all weather conditions, addressing a crucial aspect that once deterred many from cycling. Adding advanced accessories, including GPS, heart rate monitors, sensors, and connectivity, has transformed bicycles into high-tech and more comfortable companions for the rider.

Makarov mentions, “Bicycles will never stop being reinvented, improved, and refined to meet the needs they are valued for. These advancements have elevated cycling from a simple mode of transport to a smart, efficient, and enjoyable experience, making it an even more attractive option for supporting our environmental goals.”

The Allure of Modern Cycling for Greener Purpose

Cycling has gained international recognition, featuring in the Olympics and other global events. Makarov believes this exposure promotes cycling as an eco-friendly practice on a grand scale. With its advanced features, there’s a stronger push for cycling infrastructure, like dedicated bike lanes and sharing programs, making it safer and more accessible.

These improvements aim to make cycling an attractive alternative to more polluting transport options. There’s a growing movement to prioritize bikes in urban areas, combating pollution and enhancing public health, indicative of a cultural shift towards sustainable living.

“Bicycles are constantly being reinvented to fulfill the roles they serve,” Makarov reflects. Amid rising environmental and health concerns, bicycles emerge as a sustainable option that caters to both wellness and ecological stewardship, skillfully accommodating daily necessities.

An Investment More Than a Leisure

While modern cycling boasts numerous advancements, it also faces criticism over cost. Makarov acknowledges that the high-tech features and lightweight materials that define modern bicycles come at a price, potentially limiting access.

However, he contends these innovations are crucial for cycling’s long-term value. Each technological breakthrough enhances the cycling experience and represents an investment in health, the environment, and the future of transportation. He also stresses that despite the higher initial cost, modern bicycles’ durability, lower maintenance, and health and environmental benefits offer greater value over time.

“Continual advancement is essential—it’s about delivering superior performance and long-term savings,” Makarov suggests, “making modern cycling a sound investment for individuals and the planet alike.”
