Stéphane Palluel, at the head of Fusiotech, which he created in 2003, knew how to seize opportunities. His company, based in the Rives de l’Oise Technology Park in Venette, was originally specialized in electricity and industrial automation. “In 2010, we were asked to install a hypoxic chamber”, explains the manager, who then acts as a subcontractor.
A shift that pays
It is a question of equipping a room in such a way as to reduce the quantity of oxygen contained in the ambient air and to simulate the altitude, with the aim of improving physical performance. “These devices are widely used in the field of high-level sport,” specifies Stéphane Palluel. This installation opens up prospects for the entrepreneur. “The market was not ripe at that time, but I believed in it. I invested time and development to improve the process, to be able to design larger installations.”
An intuition that pays since it is, today, the almost exclusive activity of Fusiotech whose offer has widened. Thus, she installs hypoxic chambers equipped as a place of life. “They are intended for long stays, of several days or weeks. But we don’t do any physical activity there,” adds the manager. They are used in LHTL (Living high, Training low) protocols. The athlete trains at a low altitude normally and recovers the rest of the day in the hypoxia chamber. “It is endurance sports, such as cycling, which are concerned.”
Conversely, hypoxic rooms are designed for sports practice within the framework of RSH (Repeated Sprint in Hypoxia) protocols. It is a question of carrying out short and intense efforts in a repeated way in conditions equivalent to an altitude of 3,000 to 5,000 meters. “It’s like a fitness room, explains the business manager. Team sports use it, like rugby, but we also find boxing.
Upcoming recruitments
Hypoxia is also an essential tool in preparation for competitions at altitude. “Recently, we have also been designing installations where the temperature and humidity are also controlled,” he notes. Which continues: “Three years ago, we created an installation at the University Hospital of Poitiers, intended for medical research applications.”
The company has five employees who take care of the design, manufacture, and installation. “We manufacture our own custom-made electronic cards,” notes Stéphane Palluel. “We are the only ones in France, and five or six in Europe, to ensure all stages.”
The market is growing, and overseas opportunities are opening up. “We have worked in Spain and Switzerland, and we have projects in Africa,” rejoices the business manager, who is aiming for double-digit growth. Recruitment should therefore be done soon. “If the shortages of electronic components and the rise in the price of raw materials do not disrupt our order book…” warns Stéphane Palluel.
