Omurice is a popular Japanese comfort food – a chicken and vegetable fried rice flavored with ketchup and wrapped in an omelet often served with demi-glace sauce or ketchup on top. It is a great example of Western-influenced Japanese cuisine that has fans of all ages worldwide.
On March 9, 2022, a plant-based food brand “2foods” by TWO Inc. (TWO) has joined forces with Kagome Co., Ltd. (Kagome), a Japanese food manufacturing giant known for its tomato ketchup and vegetable juices, to launch its first collaborative product “2foods Plant-Based Omurice.” The new product is made from plant-based eggs called “Ever Egg,” a joint development between the two companies.
Plant-based foods have been attracting much attention in the past years as sustainable foods because of the increasing awareness of environmental considerations and health consciousness. 2foods plant-based omelet rice is a product that utilizes the plant-based “Ever Egg,” selected vegetables, and white kidney instead of soybeans. The omelet rice also utilizes TWO Inc.’s original technology called the vegetable semi-ripening method.
In April 2021, TWO concluded an inclusive business alliance agreement with Kagome, which includes collaborating to create products in an environment of open innovation, using the strengths of both companies.
After the investment round, TWO created synergies by solidifying the partnership between TWO and Kagome to accelerate growth for Japan’s plant-based processed food business. They established a business foundation for the plant-based brand 2foods.
The Ever Egg Omelet Rice does not contain any animal ingredients. It features a fluffy plant-based egg placed on tasty ketchup rice and spiced with corn and soy meat. 2foods has prepared two types of sauces for consumers to enjoy: the plant-based demi-glace sauce and premium tomato ketchup.
The soft texture the company strives for their omelet could not be easily achieved with traditional ingredients like soybeans. They decided not to use soybeans to accomplish the overwhelming fluffy texture and the gentle flavor of the original egg. With 2foods and Kagome’s new unique technology, “Vegetable semi-ripening method,” they have successfully created a plant-based egg that is cherished and loved by a lot of people.
The conventional demi-glace sauce features the umami flavor that exudes when the beef is slowly simmered. 2foods tried and eroded to realize that taste on a plant basis. Concentrating on the unique characteristics of every vegetable, they adjusted the balance to bring out the umami.
On top of that, they have utilized fried onion to accomplish the aroma and color that makes a person bring it to their mouth when they put the sauce on the plant-based omelet rice. It results from efforts that taste and look the same as ordinary demi-glace sauce.
The full-scale fluffy plant-based omelet rice “Ever Egg Omelet Rice will be available at six different 2foods stores in Tokyo, including Shibuya Loft Store, Ginza Loft Store, and Ark, from Thursday, March 10, 2022. It will also be on sale at the Hills store, Azabu Juban store, Yaesu underground shopping area store, and Lab Kitchen in Ningyocho.
2food is continuously pursuing the development of ethical plant-based foods, which stimulate the taste and enrich the heart with the concept of coexistence of healthy and contradictory junk.
Since its founding, Kagome has been building businesses that contribute to its customers’ healthy and rich eating habits. They strive to be a strong company that can grow sustainably by resolving different social problems through food.
