Making the Cut is a vibrant design show featuring some of the freshest faces in the fashion industry. The showcase is designed to find the next great fashion brand, with the winner receiving mentorship, a cash prize, and an opportunity with Amazon Fashion.
The show featured a diverse range of designers, all of whom have established brands and are looking to ascend to even greater heights. Among these future stars include Lendrell Martin, who focuses on wearable fashion.
His dream is to support community, and make sure future fashion designers in his community don’t have to go it alone.
Lucia Brochard is another eye-catching designer among the lineup. A French fashion designer from Paris, she focuses on high-end fashion lines and has learned from top fashion houses including Chloe and Paule Ka. Her brand is distributed in multiple countries, including the US, South Korea, Lebanon, and Germany.
Andrea Pitter was another notable designer. She is a super mom as well as a fashion designer with a focus on bridal looks. She dazzled the judges with her pants suit wedding look that captured both the bridal feel as well as a super sexy edge to it.
She also created a second look showcasing a curvy model, but the fit of this dress wasn’t quite perfect, narrowly losing her the lead.
Although Andrea came close, Gary Graham stole the show. Gary Graham is a gay fashion designer whose talent has already made his brand rise above the average. His winning design, “The Amanda Dress” was modeled by ‘The White Fox’, Kristin Hoppe.
The exquisite dress featured a snatched waist and used older prints and materials in a fresh new way. The dress was inspired by 19-year-old Amanda who died in 1856 and was meant to be a story of redemption. She died tragically young but now, through this look, she is brought back to life for a second chance at this world.
The dress has puffed sleeves to add femininity to the look, slit pockets for discreetly carrying small items, and a beautiful muslin cotton print. This gorgeous look is now available in the Amazon “Making the Cut” store.
Kristin Hoppe did an excellent job of modeling the dress, showing off the slit pockets that might not otherwise have been seen. Her white hair, which is where her moniker comes from, was swept back into a low ponytail. It was clear from her first strides down the runway that this would be one of the winning looks.
Kristin Hoppe’s impressive performance is all the more powerful because of the Covid restrictions in place during filming. To keep everyone safe, models had to do their own hair and makeup while following the instructions of the designers.
Gary Graham used to have a label under his name, but ended up closing his business. He is now starting a new project called GaryGraham422, which is a site-specific project in New York. You can view his work on his Instagram, @GaryGraham422. Gary’s aesthetic mission is, “Looking Back to Look Forward” and you can clearly see this in his work.
Making the Cut is an exciting fashion show that captures the reality of fashion design, and the dreams of those working hard to make that a reality. The hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn bring positive energy to the tension between designers as they each strive to realize their dreams.
Thanks to the hosts, judges, and wonderful models, Making the Cut has become an exciting new show for all to watch.
