Co-op will launch Uncommon Path print magazine; fund local journalism efforts across the U.S.

REI Co-op is launching a new venture to lift up environmental and outdoor journalism through the debut of its own print magazine this fall, and a new partnership to channel matching funds directly to local, nonprofit newsrooms covering crucial issues facing the outdoors.

The 81-year-old retailer will retire its full-price mail-order catalog in favor of Uncommon Path – a print magazine published by Hearst Magazines in collaboration with an in-house team of journalists and editors at REI. Beginning this fall, Uncommon Path will be available at all 155 REI stores and in select newsstands nationwide. Co-op leaders announced the news at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Denver, citing the belief that the co-op can better inspire a life outdoors for all by supporting compelling storytelling – both through its own channels and by supporting independent nonprofit journalists in communities across the country.

“Uncommon Path tells the stories of the experiences, the events, issues and ideas that shape the relationship between people and life outside,” said Ben Steele, REI’s executive vice president and chief customer officer. “But those stories aren’t limited to trails and peaks. They take us to parks and urban places closer to home, covering issues like climate change impacts that, due to dwindling resources and shrinking local newsrooms, are getting less and less press.”

Created with HearstMade, the media company’s award-winning branded content studio, REI’s first issue of Uncommon Path will take readers on a bike ride through Atlanta with Civil Bikes founder Nedra Deadwyler; explore the starkly beautiful landscape of the U.S./Mexico border; and discover the eerie green glow of phosphorescent diatoms in the intra-coastal waterway of northern Florida. In addition to full-length feature…

The promoter and protagonist of the feature film was last week awarded with the Luxembourg Peace Prize in the art category. Cruz Roja supports the release of the film, that arrives in Barcelona the week of the World Refugee Day

The Egyptian producer and actor Mohamed Aly presents in Barcelona The Other Land, a social content film, which narrates the odyssey of three young Egyptians trying to illegally emigrate to Italy, fleeing from their disadvantages lives. The screening will begin the week of the World Refugee Day (June 20) and Cruz Roja has given its support to the premiere.

At a time when the Mediterranean Sea has become the deadliest maritime route for refugees and migrants, the feature film, directed by Ali Edries, expresses in images the difficulties of that risky journey from the point of view of its protagonists. Emotion and action go hand in hand in a story that was shot in the open sea and finished on the Catalan coast of El Garraf.

“I wanted to make a film that would tell a human story, to convey a message,” explains Mohamed Aly, producer and protagonist of The Other Land, the film that has earned him the Luxembourg Peace Prize, awarded by the Foundation for the Peace of the Schengen area and the World Peace Forum, in the category of art. The award, which he picked up in person, last week, recognizes his commitment to initiatives to promote pace in categories such as Fine Arts, painting and sculpture. The European organization also recognizes its involvement in the creation of a cultural-pharaonic project in Barcelona that builds cultural bridges between Africa and Europe.

The Egyptian entrepreneur, with relevant businesses in the field of construction, is a recognized actor in his country after participating in 4 television…

In an exclusive interview with ATM, the actor and playwright reflects on mastering one of literature and film's best-known characters through experience, preparation and his Midwestern roots

Eight times a week, actor and playwright Jeff Daniels steps onto a Broadway stage to portray one of America’s most beloved patriarchs – Atticus Finch – in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed Broadway retelling of To Kill a Mockingbird. In an exclusive interview for the June/July issue of AARP the Magazine (ATM), Daniels discusses landing the job, constructing his own version of the iconic character for the 21st century and utilizing his years of experience to perfect the Tony-nominated role.

From the goofy Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumber to the arrogant anchor Will McAvoy in The Newsroom to the spineless husband Flap Horton in Terms of Endearment, Daniels has always put his heart and soul into every character he has portrayed. The 64-year-old heavily relied on his years of experience to prepare for the role of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, memorizing the entire script by the first rehearsal, studying the history of Southern towns and reading biographies of Harper Lee.

His dedication to the job and connection to Atticus Finch’s character helped bring the role to life. Daniels’ version of the character reflects similarities to his father – “My dad was…
